It is stated in a Hadith “The upper hand is superior to the lower hand”.
The upper hand here refers to the giving hand whilst the lower hand refers to the taking hand. From this we learn that if we are in the position to give to others we should, as Allah will increase what He gives to us and give us abundant blessings, as well as bring goodness into our lives.
Charity is also one of the five pillars of Islam and should therefore be a fundamental part of our lives as it shows sincerity in our faith.
It is referred to as one of the eight doors through which we can enter paradise.
Giving voluntary charity has countless benefits that will bless every aspect of your life including:
- It cures ailments and can even prevent death – This can also be given on someone’s behalf.
- It eases hardships- by helping others, Allah will help you.
- It is an investment for this life and the hereafter Allah promises to increase our wealth, sustenance and bring us success.
- It wipes away sins – It is mentioned in Hadith that charity extinguishes the sins like water extinguishes fire.
- It opens the doors of paradise- Charity may not show its full benefits in this life but being charitable with the will of Allah will be a means of entering paradise.
- It purifies us- This purity is a spiritual purity that can be a means of entering paradise.
- It is a means of accepted prayer – By helping others, Allah can give you what you ask for should you give it with sincerity.
- It creates balance and benefits all of society – Not only does it connect the helping and the needy but also ensures that the vulnerable such as orphans, widows, the sick etc. It also ensures that we all have an equal standing in society.
One thing about voluntary charity is that it does not have to be money. Allah is the most kind and will not deprive those from the reward of giving charity who are not able to. Any good act will be classified as charity. Charity can be something as small as removing something harmful like a thorn from the path so nobody hurts themselves or even smiling as it may have a positive effect on someone.
We should all make a sincere intention to give charity with the hope of reward.
